Shilajit and Wound Healing

by Angie Mohr

Shilajit’s potential to aid wound healing and scar reduction stems from its rich composition of fulvic acid, humic acid, over 80 minerals (e.g., zinc, magnesium, copper), and antioxidants, which support tissue repair, reduce inflammation, and enhance cellular regeneration.

Wound healing involves three main phases: inflammation, proliferation (tissue formation), and remodeling (tissue strengthening). Shilajit may support these processes through its bioactive compounds and anti-inflammatory properties.

Anti-Inflammatory Effects: Shilajit reduces inflammation by neutralizing free radicals and lowering pro-inflammatory cytokines via its fulvic acid and antioxidant content. This helps manage the initial inflammatory phase of wound healing, preventing excessive inflammation that could delay recovery or cause tissue damage.

Antioxidant Protection: Oxidative stress from free radicals can impair wound healing by damaging cells. Shilajit’s antioxidants protect fibroblasts and keratinocytes (cells critical for tissue repair) from oxidative damage, promoting faster healing.

Mineral Support: Shilajit contains zinc, copper, and magnesium, which are essential for wound healing:

  • Zinc: Supports cell proliferation, collagen synthesis, and immune function, speeding up tissue repair.
  • Copper: Promotes angiogenesis (new blood vessel formation) and collagen cross-linking, strengthening new tissue.
  • Magnesium: Aids cellular repair and energy production for tissue regeneration.

Fulvic Acid and Nutrient Delivery: Fulvic acid enhances nutrient absorption and delivery to wound sites, ensuring cells have the resources needed for repair. It may also improve microcirculation, delivering oxygen and nutrients to healing tissues.

Antimicrobial Properties: Shilajit has mild antimicrobial effects, which may reduce the risk of wound infections, a common barrier to healing.

Oral Use: Taking 100–300 mg of purified shilajit resin daily (e.g., in my keto hot chocolate) supports systemic wound healing by reducing inflammation, providing minerals, and enhancing cellular repair. This is ideal for internal support of skin and tissue recovery.

Topical Use: In Ayurveda, shilajit is mixed with ghee, honey, or a carrier oil and applied to wounds to promote healing and prevent infection. I am using Shilajit mixed with Vit. E oil (from a capsule) and other oils like castor for the scar on my knee scar from surgery.

  • Note: Use only purified shilajit for topical application to avoid contaminants. We have a good source you can trust.

My Keto Hot Chocolate Recipe, with shilajit, mushroom powder, triphala ghee, etc. supports wound healing systemically through:

  • Shilajit’s minerals and anti-inflammatory effects.
  • Mushroom powder’s (e.g., reishi, chaga) immune and anti-inflammatory support.
  • Triphala ghee’s antioxidant and digestive benefits, aiding nutrient delivery.
  • Glycine’s role in collagen synthesis, critical for wound closure.
  • Phospholipids in sunflower lecithin are key components of cell membranes. They may aid in repairing damaged tissues by supporting the regeneration of cell membranes. Vitamin E
  • Glycine supports collagen production.

Keto Hot Chocolate Recipe

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup nut milk or milk of your choice
  • 3/4 cup full fat canned coconut milk
  • Splash of 10% cream (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cacao powder
  • 1 square dark chocolate (I used cacao butter and cacao paste)
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • A pinch of natural salt (I used pink Himalayan salt)

To sweeten:

This is a personal choice, I use 1 tsp of glycine, ½-1 tsp inulin (both sweeten without blood sugar spikes) and lately have been adding a tiny amount of molasses if it needs extra sweetness.

You can sweeten with things like:

½ to one teaspoon of Stevia or Monk fruit powder (or to taste)
Or any of your favorite sweeteners. The full fat coconut milk adds some sweetness as well.

OPTIONAL

  • Shilajit resin – up to a good pea sized amount or more.
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon – rich in antioxidants (e.g., polyphenols) and has anti-inflammatory properties.
  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg – Nutmeg contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds like myristicin
  • ½  tsp mushroom powder – Helps with inflammation and
  • Triphala Ghee (can use regular ghee, grass fed butter or coconut oil)
  • Sunflower lecithin

(I used all of these added ingredients)

Instructions

Add all ingredients into a small saucepan. Heat gently on the stove and stir until hot and all ingredients are blended together well.

Blend with a whisk or milk frother. The Sunflower lecithin creates a nice froth and emulsifies the ingredients.

Pour into your favorite mug and enjoy.

You may want extra milk or just add more water, it’s a very rich recipe but that may be because of the cacao paste too.

I vary this recipe almost every time I make it, adding supplements like iodine and boron. Experiment with the chocolate and sweetness to suit your taste.

DELICIOUS!!!!
