My Simple Evening (or Morning) Cacao Drink

Last night I made my cacao drink, took the first sip, and this heart naturally formed on top. I wasn’t trying to make it happen at all — it just appeared. Cacao has been traditionally used for centuries as a heart-opening plant, so I thought it was pretty cool. 

This is a very simple, traditional-style cacao drink. I keep it minimal so the beautiful chocolate flavor really shines through.

Cacao paste is one of the oldest and most sacred foods on earth. Used for thousands of years by ancient Mesoamerican cultures in ceremonial rituals, it’s packed with powerful antioxidants, magnesium, and compounds that support mood, heart health, and gentle energy. Unlike processed cocoa powder, real cacao paste is pure, minimally processed cacao — rich, complex, and deeply nourishing.

Basic Recipe (1 serving):

  • 12–16 oz full-fat milk (dairy, coconut, nut milk)
  • 15–25g Criollo cacao paste (grated or finely chopped — roughly 1.5 to 2 heaping Tbsp to start)

  • 1 tsp butter, ghee, or coconut manna or coconut oil (optional but recommended especially if using lower fat milk).
  • Tiny pinch of sea salt

Method:

Gently warm the milk. Add the cacao paste, butter/ghee/coconut manna, and salt. Whisk until melted and smooth. I use a milk frother. Remove from heat.

My usual additions: (add before whisking/frothing)

  • Splash of vanilla
  • Light sprinkle of nutmeg and/or cinnamon

Optional extras (try the basic version first):

  • Small amounts of chaga, lion’s mane, or other mushroom powders
  • Tiny pinch of shilajit – added minerals and detox
  • Small amount of Maca powder – balance hormones and adds sweetness

I don’t use any sweetener — the salt and vanilla really enhance the natural chocolate flavor. Start simple and adjust to your liking.

Tip: I like to grate a little extra cacao paste on top with a small garlic grater right before drinking. Take a sip and see what shape your cacao forms… you might be surprised! ❤️
