A well aligned human body is like a neat stack of Jenga blocks. If you put a wedge at one end under one side all of the pieces above that have to shift in order to keep the structure erect and from toppling over.
Raised heels in shoes cause all of the joints to compensate by changing position to try to maintain a balance which results in misalignment in the upper structures of the body. Barefoot shoes have a zero drop (no heel rise) to let the body maintain natural alignment. Raised heels also force the achilles tendon into a shortened position so over time it can become chronically tight. The same thing happens to the muscles and connective tissue in other joints since a raised heel changes the entire alignment of the body.
Barefoot shoes also help to strengthen feet and give the foot the freedom to move and be used as feet were designed to move. They help improve the arch of the foot which act as springs when walking or running. Conventional shoes act like a cast on the foot, weakening the intrinsic muscles. Arch support prevents proper movement through the arch or retaining strength, so over time the arches fall and can’t function without arch support.
Barefoot shoes have a thin flexible sole so the feet can feel the ground and tell the brain what to do.
